3/2/10 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Wednesday

by Katie (Jenny Craig 2009 Poster Girl) 3. March 2010 22:13

Today I went over what constitutes a healthy meal with my students.  Their assignment was to plan a healthy dinner for their parents.  We discussed the food pyramid and what defined "healthy."  It was CRAZY to me what some of my students thought were healthy items.  For example, one student thought that everytime he has looked at the food pyramid (starches are at the very base of the pyramid) it meant eat a TON of starch.  When I asked him what food should be the largest group on your plate he thought it was the starches.  I realized how much I had to teach my students!  Some of them thought a Fruit Roll-up was a healthy serving of fruit for the day!  Since the food pyramid shows you need meat one of my students thought healthy meant sausage, bacon, or steak.  I then had to backtrack and have a conversation about what lean meats were.  Do most of my students really live on white starch, high fat meats, and sugars on a daily basis?!  Sadly, it appears so...
